Organize Series for Wordpress 2.6

My series plugin, that proved great so far, started to fail on me a bit after installing Wordpress 2.6, but this evening I found some fixes.

One of the bugs is that the administration menus don’t link correctly any longer.

Open orgSeries.php, and replace the function series_organize_options (line 156) with the following:

Delete Wordpress 2.6 Revisions

Wordpress 2.6 introduces revisions to each post.

That actually caused my series plugin to break down, but that was fixed by me with two edits.

But the main part is that.. weirdly.. the Wordpress team didn’t put an option to disable these, as they can create useless data records. I, for one, like the feature, but I don’t see myself using that.

It’s neat for publishers and multi-user blogging, when people review and edit and add photos, etc.. one person at a time. But when there’s just one person doing it.. it’s close to useless. I couldn’t care less how this post looked like one day or one month ago..

So the only way to turn the feature off is to edit your wp-config.php file and put

define ('WP_POST_REVISIONS', 0);

But what about those revisions left in your database? Several posts look as if they found the true answer, but it’s one of those “The one who laughs last, laughs best” situations. Didn’t those people hear about post meta? Or about post terms (tags, categories, or series?! )?¹

Cliché - The light at the end of the tunnel

This was my forth and my last year of Bachelor studies at the Romanian-American University in Bucharest. I think I’ll start sometime to recap the good and the bad parts, but for now let’s just let it slide ,)

It’s been quite a busy spring and summer..

Thank goodness I took a one month holiday in spring to Poland and Sweden. Otherwise it would have been a no holiday year with bachelor studies finishing mid-July and leaving Romanian mid-August.

But it’s all over now, both the Bachelor studies and the entrance to Master studies.

The result.. a nice GPA of 3.59 [out of 4] (3.62 if you take into consideration my Erasmus courses as well), a 9.6 [out of 10] final examination and a 10 degree thesis project.

My Bachelor Degree Paper

I’m publishing online my Bachelor Degree paper (thesis; ro. Lucrare de Licență).

Why? Several reasons. One of them is because I think it’s normal to publish your works. The others are all on a need-to-know basis

I’d say it’s not great, ’cause it’s not what I wanted in the first place (things needed prioritization), but even so it’s still a good paper and project.

I liked the analysis part, in terms of management and effort/outcome ratio, along with adjusting the project to the needs.

YouTube and Romanian TV

One year (and 11 days ago, to be exact) I filed a petition to the National Audiovisual Council of Romania, concerning TV channels doing one-question yes-or-no surveys during talk-shows and presented just the percentages in the end, but not the very low number of voters. And I got reply. Now I’m not saying I changed the world, but probably there were other complaints regarding the issue, and in time.. they started to follow the moral line. Or maybe I just didn’t watch so much TV ,)

Well, this summer was quite busy, so I can’t say that I watched that much TV other than for the pure “pleasure” of having something around that makes a bit of noise.

Pidgin ICQ: The client version you are using is too old

A couple of days ago, my Pidgin wouldn’t connect to ICQ any longer.

It seems that the “lovely” ICQ team pushes people to upgrade their ICQ messenger, or else.. to switch to ICQ.

pidgin.im seems to be down, and there’s no solution anywhere, except for a patch ¹. But most of us don’t do ICQ builds every time we pee, so that’s practically of no help. But there’s hope!

Repagination

Repagination is a little Firefox addon that enables you to load paginated entries on the same web page.

For instance, Google Search results. Or a forum’s topic. Or even better: FlickR streams!

You just right-click on a “Next” link, or on a numbered link, you will see Re-Pagination and choose an action from the submenu. As easy as that, and the page will automatically append the next pages.

The extension is not ready for Firefox 3, unless you hack it a bit.¹

Until the extension updates, here’s my hack Repagination for Firefox3.
You can also try antipagination (you will need a Mozilla Developer account because it is marked as experimental).

I’ll see if I can bring some improvements on the line, if time allows, but.. that’s not a top priority for me.

Free Swedish tuition at its end?

In today’s (n.r. June 23, 2008) Svenska Dagblade (Dagens Nyheter too), an article was published stating that this autumn a bill introducing tuition fees for higher studies in Sweden will be under vote. If it will get the necessary votes, then starting January 1st, 2010, at the latest, Swedish universities will ask for a tuition fee and they will also be able to give scholarships. Who said all that? Lars Leijonborg, the current Swedish minister for Higher Education and Research.

The Local covered this story as well, but in a light English version.

After just one day of votes, an SvD poll shows 9000+ people answering YES! to the question Is it right to impose fees for overseas students?

There are also negative voices around starting from the chair of the Swedish association of student unions, and ending with the universities themselves. You can browse some comments on thelocal.se here and here.

This action probably also related to the increasing number of foreign students, especially due to a presumed high number of Pakistan applicants (50% of the total international applicants), which puts a pressure on the centralized system, that the system obviously cannot or can hardly cope with.

On July 27, The Local stepped up and provided a round up of all the Swedish news and positions regarding the tuition fee.
