…trying not to become a man of success, but rather a man of value. (Albert E.)
On Monday morning (August 18th), Trevor and I were applying for a personnummer at Skatteverket.
On Thursday (August 21st), Trevor and I both received the personnummer. Of course, he was the only one to receive the letter as well, since I had problems with getting a mailbox (side talk).
But things are still good, since the letter you get (still a personbevis) is worth nothing. After you receive that, you must go to Skatteverket, or onto their website and request a specific personbevis for each thing that you need - bank account, ID card, etc.
I wonder how much it will take for those applying after the 25th.
Regarding the ID card (kort) and why it is so important.. well.. these days after shopping at a home appliances place… guess what! I was asked to show my ID card. Then at ONOFF as well. And with Romanian ID cards, and having the birthdate part of the social security number, and not individually specified there.. quite tricky!
Other than that.. I won’t need to show my ID card at Systembolaget, but around many other places as well. Basically every card with my name on it, but not my photo on it, needs to be backed up by an ID card that has a photo, or even my birthdate.
For instance, when getting discounts with the student union card… you will need to show an ID card as well.
Thus, if you stay for 2 years in Sweden, it’s really better to get an ID card.
Or, you can always try your luck with your national ID card or your passport every time you buy booze
…
So far I think, and hope, that Handelsbanken gives you an ID card on the spot, if you can bring a person with a Swedish ID. Nordea, SEB and Swedbank only after 6 months or so of you being a customer. In the next few days, I will apply at Handelsbanken and see how this turns out.

Hey,
I don’t understand. I have my Personnumer now, but it isn’t valid? Can you show me what web site I need to go to to get the valid one and explain a little more what you mean? I want to get a bank account here and probably an ID card. For everything else, they’ve just asked for my personnumer and nothing else (mobile phone, Dr’s office, etc.). But I haven’t tried the bank yet.
Thanks!

It’s not that it isn’t valid, but you need a specific certificate from Skatteverket for the bank account and ID card.

I wonder whether the ISIC card would be helpful as an ID?
It has photo, date of birth, name and place of study. And entitles you to some other discounts

@Alejandro Valenzuela: Nope. Birthdate needed as well. At least when you shop around.

It does state your date of birth (and my comment says so)
Anyway I don’t think it’s that useful, the Chalmers Festu people did not seem convinced by it. They liked my country’s ID card though

Hi!
I got my personnumer today, and inside the envelope there were two additional sheets that said on the top “personbevis” , and one said “ID-kort” and the other “bankärende” (banking)… those are the personbevis you were writting about??
My principal concern is about health treatment… with the personnumber that I was given, can i go to a vardcentral a ask for an appointment alredy???or do i have to ask for an additional document?
Anyway, I opened a bank account without a personnumber at Nordea, and they alredy gave me the visa electron card.. is that ok?? It was very easy in case anyone needs a bank account rigth now.

@Veronica: I have no idea how/if you can use the additional sheets that you got, since that envelope got returned to Skatteverket in my case, due to mailbox problems.
About health.. actually after you get your personnummer notification, you should receive in some weeks some forms from Försäkringskassa. After you fill out and send those forms you will be properly insured. Right now, I don’t think you are.. just with a personnummer.
PS: I’d say for me it’s natural to get a VISA, but here.. everybody is handing out Maestro first, and only after you “confirm” yourself as a good customer (you deposit money, your usage is steady, etc.), they issue VISA. But hey.. if you got one right from the start, yuhuu!

@Andrei Neculau: No need to wait for anything else. And FK will answer you that they won’t register you coz u havent any incomes here yet. So one can contact doctors directly after recieveing PN. Even it is absolutely another story about how to get an appointment with doctor in Sweden….=)))

@Ikrom Hotamov: All banks give ID cards, just that with Nordea, SEB, etc.. you need to wait like 6 months or something. With Handelsbanken, if you have a Swedish citizen to guarantee for you, then you can get it at the same time you open up a bank account.

If it helps anyone: In nordea they told me that in order to get a ID card I had to go with a “close relative” who has a swedish ID card, as some kind of proof or something. So since of course I dont have any relatives in sweden, I dont know if I qualify to get the famous card..hope I’d never need it!

Just a note:
The ISIC (International Student Identification Card) will get you inside parties and pubs (i’ve been to a few), but probably not a bank account.

@Alejandro Valenzuela: Some. Tested the ISIC on a Turkish girl. Didn’t work.
