…trying not to become a man of success, but rather a man of value. (Albert E.)
This is something you might have or you might hear soon about.
As the phrase goes, pre-offer letters imply that during the admission process some students might receive letters of appreciation from a head of department, or an application reviewer.
This will not be anything fancy, but it will state that they have gone through your application and were delighted by your qualities and profile, and that they hope you will stay with them.
The pre-offer can also be just getting into the DA Selection Group.
The system is domino-like1 therefore even if you get accepted to all your alternatives, only the one with priority 1 will be available for you to accept or deny.
But even if online you will be admitted to one alternative and one only, if you got a pre-offer letter (or DA) then you can still choose to go elsewhere than there you got admitted online.
It might be hard to comprehend these pre-offer letters. But if you got a pre-offer from alternative 2, while you got admitted to alternative 1, and in the meantime you reckoned that alternative 2 is better than the first, you can contact the programme coordinator of alternative 2 and tell them that you are sticking with them. Your admission to alternative 1 will be deleted.

May be im being a bit impatient, but does anybody have any idea, how MR works.. Some people say the higher it is, more are the chances for admission.
Also, can someone guess what is meant by “MAAU” (it shows in kth programs)

Hi!
First and foremost, thanks for the info! It seems like you know a great deal about this cryptic admission process, and lost souls like me truly appreciate you sharing your insight!
I have applied to KTH’s Engineering and Management of Information Systems master’s program, and of course I have been frantically checking studera.nu several times a day. Today there was finally some news in there - namely, I got a SG and an MR. My SG is “Master alternativt utval” and my MR is… 52. From what I gathered from what you’d written, the MR numbers are really not very telling, although it DOES worry me a lot that everyone is talking about numbers like 900 and mine is …. 52. That might have something to do with the fact that I’m from Armenia - a non-EU country with a non-credit educational system. However, of course I DO have a bachelor’s degree, all honors, in Applied Math and Computer Science, and I’m working as a Java web developer and all that.
Question - my having an MR does at least mean that I have all the necessary qualifications, I hope? I sent all my documents via DHL and, of course, I have no idea whether they have received them, or whether they have some problems with my 3rd-world high school transcript…
Also, do you maybe have some insight about the “alternativt utval” SG? Alternative choice, right? Does that mean that I’m in some kind of a waiting-list group of people who MIGHT get a place if lots of people decide NOT to choose the given program? Thoughts?
Any kind of input would be greatly appreciated… No doubt I’m totally and completely worried, especially since I applied to only one program..
Thanks a LOT!

Sam: I got MAAU too… It’s “Master alternativt utval”.. meaning “Master alternativ choice”. Not sure what it means, but given my luck, I think it’s some kind of a semi-waitinglist thing…

I too, got some changes in the columns of SG and MR as MAAU and 32 respectively; for KTH…
..and after going through the long discussions (for almost over an hour) on several of these blog pages and facebook, iv decided not to give a little rat’s ass. The system is way to crappy and wierd for normal people to decipher.
I think the best option is to relax and wait for the 29th instead of going crazy trying to find meanings of these silly acronyms on studera!

Hello people, if u want to see what does it mean the merit rating u have to go in your page of studera and, before to write id and password, u have to add ?sv to the browser. It will appear the Swedish site and U have to enter and go in the page of “follow application” (It will be in Swedish so use the memory to reach it!!).
At the bottom of the page there will be the explanation of your the selection group and then u have only to translate it with an on-line dictionary ( http://lexin2.nada.kth.se/swe-eng.html ).
Good luck!!

I have the same issue. Happened 2 days ago, then yesterday came back to the given SG and MR. Today it is back to Application in process.
All I can tell you is relax. Why? Not because studera is doing a great job, but because the universities keep track of their admission outside the centralized system.

Thank u very much, so it means nothing? anyway im much more relaxed now . this studera is getting me crazy, well, it is getting us…ive been studying in norway and i have swedish friends and it’s quite weird they have such a pointless and unuseful way to say we are accepted or not.. even more when studera.nu was designed to simplify everything…
anyway i guess they didn’t expect the huge amount of applicants we are.
let’s wait then, because i was going to call the university..i dont know

Everyone is saying that” they didnt expect the huge amount of applicants”.. I dont understand what changed in the world so badly this year that all the world decided to move to sweden..
how it can just increase ’so much’ just in an year?
Andrei Neculau
April 20th, 2008 at 12:46 am
@Sam: Thing is that this is the first year when they have the centralized system in place for international students as well.
And I think they got the math wrong. I mean it is so easy to add one more programme on a list than to create another package of documentation, if it wasn’t for the centralized system - which implied one package for each application.
Also, I think it was a word-to-word thing. Some people wanted to apply to Swedish universities. Then the application procedure became so easy. They spoke to friends. Friends applied also.

Hi Andrei; Wow thank you so much for creating this blog. My inquary is as follows;
In 07 i applied to SLU directly to the university, I had not heard from them until two weeks before registration ended, I received a call from the programs coordinator asking me whether I was still coming - mind youI had not received an official admision letter yet! In fact they claimed that i was one of their towp candiddate and that another candidate had not responded - in fact this candidate had been awarded the scholarship - money that had to be returned back to SI. even if I had the funding I would not have beenable to obtain a student visa in a week and half. So with this disapiontment I was encouraged to apply again and this time through Studera.
Despite having received admission last year I am still very very nervous. My SG is AU Alternativt urval as I have come to interpret it as Alternatively selected also that I am on some sort of waiting list. But this upset me greatly because after the huge mistake from last year I do not beleive tht I should be on a waiting list.My MR is 1 - dont know what that means considering I completed my degree in the US.
I have decided that I will give a call to the program coordinator who I have been in touch since last year.
Do you have any advise or thoughts based on my situation ??
Vary nervously waitin- Florence
Andrei Neculau
April 20th, 2008 at 11:15 pm
@conf1208: Yes, there are people who are directly accepted (get pre-offer letters). That doesn’t mean at all that others get “rejected”. That logic doesn’t work.
They do not take the place of others, but take what their application deserves. Often this helps them to get a visa beforehand.
Andrei Neculau
April 20th, 2008 at 11:20 pm
@Florence C: Unfortunately I don’t have any advice, other than your decision - to give a call or write an e-mail to the coordinator.
I would say that you should have been notified already that “they are glad to have you back, and that they have a place for you reserved”. But that is totally pure supposition.

Sam, plz don’t mind. Essentially, I have reached at this decision collecting informations on my status of SG and MR provided by the universities. Look, I’ve applied in three universities among them two univs giving the SG like “AUM” and “MA08″. Both of these SG have the common elaboration i.e. “Meritvärde” and “master/MasterH08″. As you know “master and MasterH08″ merely explains the program name. Well, what the “Meritvärde” term means ? In English, it has the synonym like Qualification, Credit Value. Now, you see the below message in swedish provided by one of the university among the two universities I am telling now (the third university has the different result for me). “Du uppfyller de särskilda behörighetskraven helt eller delvis genom reell kompetens. Beslutet gäller denna utbildning, denna termin.” The English version of this message is like “You meet the special requirement entire or partial through real competence. The decision concerns this education, this semester”. So far as I can guess it means that I qualify for the program but the merit rate will play role here for the final selection. Now see the result of my third university. It gives the SG status “DA” which means “Direct Admission” in English and merit rate 999. If I count that the result is good for third university as it has the DA status. For the other two universities I am competing for my position. Outside these two phenomenons, there may have another status which indicates the “waiting list” probably. That’s why I congratulate everybody who has the SG “Meritvärde” (whatever the acronym is, if it has that elaboration). What’s your opinion? Am I wrong with my explanation?

Untill the 16th of april ,the status of my admission was “NOT processed” , recently, It changed to
SG-Unqualified
MR-specific requirements not fulfilled.
And, its been shown in all the 8 subjects

Djellel
April 22nd, 2008 at 12:06 am
@Mounir, I like your theory but I think that the MAAU means the waiting list. look if you were admited in the first 2 progs then you will have a DA like for the 3rd. As your are in a waitin list and your accepted is the last one after not yet confirmed courses then you should wait for the second or third selection rounds. but having a DA somewhere you are most likely to be accepted Inchaleh.
Andrei Neculau
April 22nd, 2008 at 12:28 am
@Hakan Yılmaz: MAÖS and UTL are simply Selection Groups. As I’ve written here you should simply not worry about their meaning. Your letter of accept that you will receive or not is the only one that will mean something and we’ll make you relax.
@Djellel: MAAU so far is something that a nice majority of KTH applicants got. So, it is simply a selection group. Nothing “alternative” about it, even if the name states so. The only exception was DA (Direct Admission) for special “geniuses”.

Andrei Neculau

@Inf: From what I know DA programmes will always be a choice for you, even if you get accepted to another programme with a higher priority.
Right now you can only delete programmes, but you cannot change your priority since that would mean adding the programmes and that is not possible since the deadline is passed.

I’m assuming that one of the most common problems that applicants are facing relates to uncertianity, as applying for international univeristies is never an easy tasks. From applications, to ref. letters, personal statements, transcripts and above all visa issues.

Do you like this pessimistic phrase “beating around the bush” which means “Not discussing to the point (here SG and MR) rather insisting on some other things”?
Okay.
You do me a favour translating the following message in actual meaning. What I have got is a word to word meaning which may not be expressed in full. If you can, please collect the actual English meaning of the following message and let us understand the probability we have in this particular university.
“Engelska: Du uppfyller de särskilda behörighetskraven helt eller delvis genom reell kompetens. Beslutet gäller denna utbildning, denna termin.”

nick
April 24th, 2008 at 4:46 pm
Blame it on the online admin. system which was supposedly meant to streamline the admissions process, but it only put undue stress on the universities.
Previously seperate application packages were reqd. for each university (in case an applicant wanted to apply for degrees in diff. universities). Studera offered an all in one solution! Theoretically a person can apply to 8 diff. universities through this system, all in a single application package. Do the math and you get to know the complexity of the situiation.
Can’t really blame the universities for this obvious delay!

@Djellel: Guest scholarship is one type of the SI scholarships, but it often blends and they have the same meaning.
About how they are awarded.. They must have a system, but it all happens behind closed doors, so just wait for a YES or NO from them. Nothing much you can do.
You can think of the Swedish Institute as a businessman who can help you or others with money. In the end, the guy doesn’t need to defend his decision whatsoever. It is his interests at stake and that only.

@Djellel: No! DA is simply one of the possible Selection Groups!
DA is just “whatever the rankings are, this student is accepted anyway”. Others, within other Selection Groups, will simply go through the system and be accepted or not.
All of those accepted in the first round (meaning now, during May 8-15) will be taking their chance at a SI scholarship.

Hi Andrei;
You mean to tell me they have changed the dates AGAIN!!!
You know I am begining to consider univerities elsewhere- not just because I am nervous but to me the administration process is the first sense of what the ultimamte experience is goign to be with the school- if they can’t simply process applications with clear and susinct notifications..who’s to say just how organized their programs are depite it being free- or perhaps this is the very reason for the debacle.

Hi Andrei;
This is my last note; but i wanted to give a word of thanx- your blog has truly been my saving grace. I have decided not to go to Sweden- I have not even got my final decision- i will not wait around for their circus date changing ways. I am now deciding between 2 schools in the US and 4 in the UK. Might i just add;
