…trying not to become a man of success, but rather a man of value. (Albert E.)
This scenario describes the situation when you have one programme marked with “Admitted”, and one or more higher-priority programmes are marked with “Res #”.
This is by far the trickiest situation yet, as there is no clear answer on what is the protocol on this.
Linköping University replied to me by email on this matter and confirmed my previous analysis, that you can read bellow.
– EMAIL EXCERPT - May 19 –
Hej,
Sorry I did not answer before but it is pretty hectic around here! If a student accepts a lower priority (say no 2) and later is admitted to a higher (prio 1) the second priority disappears and only the first remains. So yes he can reply YES for no 2 and still remain on the waiting list for no 1.
Even so, if we cool down and don’t fret or dispare, we can clear most of this out on our own.
One thing is that you shouldn’t daydream about programmes for which your position on the waiting list is higher than 20 on average (or about 50% of the exact number of students that programme allows). Maybe I should highlight that even if you are Reserve 50, in a programme with 30 students, you could still get in, but that is closer to playing the lottery than getting admitted.
Keep in mind that the waiting list has been built quite randomly - meaning Reserve 1 doens’t need to have a better MR than Reserve 2. Reasons for that are yet unknown, but the situation was confirmed by a university reviewer. That is why, people that are ahead of you on the waiting list might accept at the blink of an eye, if they make it. Which means that the available places exponentially become smaller by the number of each rejection. Try to play with a couple of puppet-soldiers impersonating their attitude
as this might be heard to follow just in words.
You also need to consider that the only chance for you to get a scholarship is to stick with the programme that is marked “Admitted”, since if you are admitted in the second round, your application to the Swedish Institute is not taken into consideration.
My recommendation is to simply accept the first round admission, if you are not within the first 5 reserves for another programme that you badly want with all your heart! Or at least wait until the latest days until the reply deadline. In the meantime, we noticed that some programmes, while they slowly receive rejections from admitted students, they already notify reserves that they have been admitted, and they do not wait for the second admission round.
Just to be clear, if you accept your first round admission, and then you get admitted to a higher priority, you should be able to deny the later, if you want to keep your first round admission.
Options:
This scenario describes the situation when you have NO programme marked with “Admitted”, yet one or more higher-priority programmes are marked with “Res #”.
So far, the assumption is that you are considered for all programmes where you are on the waiting list. Therefore you don’t need to do anything, and just wait for the second admission round.
Although it is weird, some people where still on the waiting list, even after the second admission round. It is unknown how that should be interpreted, but I guess you still have a chance. You need to correlate that chance with the time frame you have for getting the visa, if you need one. So, if you need a visa, I guess you could still keep your hopes up until mid July (one month for visa + school starts on September 1).

May be im being a bit impatient, but does anybody have any idea, how MR works.. Some people say the higher it is, more are the chances for admission.
Also, can someone guess what is meant by “MAAU” (it shows in kth programs)

Hi!
First and foremost, thanks for the info! It seems like you know a great deal about this cryptic admission process, and lost souls like me truly appreciate you sharing your insight!
I have applied to KTH’s Engineering and Management of Information Systems master’s program, and of course I have been frantically checking studera.nu several times a day. Today there was finally some news in there - namely, I got a SG and an MR. My SG is “Master alternativt utval” and my MR is… 52. From what I gathered from what you’d written, the MR numbers are really not very telling, although it DOES worry me a lot that everyone is talking about numbers like 900 and mine is …. 52. That might have something to do with the fact that I’m from Armenia - a non-EU country with a non-credit educational system. However, of course I DO have a bachelor’s degree, all honors, in Applied Math and Computer Science, and I’m working as a Java web developer and all that.
Question - my having an MR does at least mean that I have all the necessary qualifications, I hope? I sent all my documents via DHL and, of course, I have no idea whether they have received them, or whether they have some problems with my 3rd-world high school transcript…
Also, do you maybe have some insight about the “alternativt utval” SG? Alternative choice, right? Does that mean that I’m in some kind of a waiting-list group of people who MIGHT get a place if lots of people decide NOT to choose the given program? Thoughts?
Any kind of input would be greatly appreciated… No doubt I’m totally and completely worried, especially since I applied to only one program..
Thanks a LOT!
Gaia

Sam: I got MAAU too… It’s “Master alternativt utval”.. meaning “Master alternativ choice”. Not sure what it means, but given my luck, I think it’s some kind of a semi-waitinglist thing…

@Gaia: So far, so good I would say. If you got an SG and MR, you are “in the game”.
Regarding MAAU, so far it is simply a selection group so far.
Discussions on this topic are supposed to take place on a Facebook page though.

Hi guys,
I have just got MR 29 and SG MAAU from KTH.
Actually I don not know whether my number is a good merit rating or not,but as Andrie said it is good enough to know “I am in the game”
Good Luck

This is my situation:
- MR: 999, that seems to mean that I’m good for them to make the master
- SG: DA, that in the Swedish site is “Direktantagning”… The translation in English is “direct admission”…
I’ m not sure of this!! Can everyone tell me what does it mean??? Am I admited?? I cannot belive it…

Jacopo, congratulations! That indeed means your application was so nice that they accepted you already (special case)
For the others, and for you Jacopo
— I’m going to tell you the exact same thing I wrote above:
And also, may I please remind you that discussions on this topic are supposed to take place on a Facebook page though.

I too, got some changes in the columns of SG and MR as MAAU and 32 respectively; for KTH…
..and after going through the long discussions (for almost over an hour) on several of these blog pages and facebook, iv decided not to give a little rat’s ass. The system is way to crappy and wierd for normal people to decipher.
I think the best option is to relax and wait for the 29th instead of going crazy trying to find meanings of these silly acronyms on studera!
Best of luck to all applicants. Godspeed
