Back in September 2007, I started to build a common Smiley Theme for the Pidgin Multi-protocol Messenger. The innovation was that it was implementing the original emoticons/smileys of their respective messenger/protocol - Yahoo!, AIM, ICQ, etc.
Today I give it a major push - easy installation and new hosting place.

Installation
- Download Original Smileys (17632) - 2.45 MB
- Open Pidgin, click Tools from the main menu, then Preferences (or simply Ctrl+P in the Pidgin window)
- Go to the Smiley Themes tab
- Drag and drop the downloaded tgz archive (i.e. pidgin-original-x.x.x.tgz), or click Add and point to the archive
- Select Original Smileys from the list, and click OK

I attempted to edit the pidgin-original theme file to pull the emotes for AIM 6.5 from a folder of iChat icons that I had been using previously as default. I copied the same format and the directories are correct; however, pidgin no longer recognizes the theme file in *-original, but it will recognize the other *-original-* folders. I’ve done this before, and never had it completely ignore a theme file. Do you know why this might be happening?

@Brandon: 1. I have no idea what you did wrong and I’m not going to spend time/energy figuring it out. Don’t take it the wrong way, but my time is very limited these days.
2. As far as I know the latest version of the Original Smileys theme has the icons for AIM 6.5

Using Pidgin 2.5.2, on Ubuntu 8.10. skype4pidgin, pidgin-facebookchat-1.38, msn-pecan, and your smiley pack installed. Smileys don’t work, and whenever I try to change anything in the Smiley Themes section of Preferences, Pidgin dies - just closes itself. Any idea where the problem is?

@James: Sorry to reply to myself, but I uninstalled skype4pidgin as it wasn’t being used much, and then disabled my Facebook account. Smileys now work on all other networks. Not a real solution, but perhaps a step in the right direction..

@James: I can honestly say I’m using Pidgin weekly, with YAHOO; MSN; GTALK; FACEBOOK; SKYPE; ICQ; AIM; QQ; GG; TLEN, and my Smiley theme, on Vistax32.. absolutely no problem (only the Facebook plugin does crash my Pidgin now and then)
I’m glad you found your fix, but as a general rule.. my smiley theme cannot really crash Pidgin on an individual scale (i.e. only on some systems).

Unfortunately Pidgin crashes in Ubuntu Intrepid 8.10×64 as well with when the smileys are installed and attempt is made to use them. It’s most likely a x64 related bug.

@Arup Roy Chowdhury: Since I cannot do testing on an x64 machine, can you please try out the “single” themes for each protocol, and isolate the protocol themes that are crashing Pidgin?

Hi Andrei, sorry to bother again.. but for some reason the new Gtalk coloured smileys go into a loop.. that is, after I hit enter, the animation (conversion from text smiley to a graphical one) keeps looping over and over again. It works fine for other smileys though.
Perhaps you’d like to take a look at it. Thanks!

@Aditya: It’s true. I already put it in the changelog as a TO DO, but I have no time now to edit them and set the looping to 1, instead of 0 (forever).
If you(or someone else) can do it, then just send the GIFs back to me, and I’ll update the theme pack.

The latest smileys don’t crash on Ubuntu Intrepid x64. Job well done, its most likely a Windows issue.
