…trying not to become a man of success, but rather a man of value. (Albert E.)
Back in September 2007, I started to build a common Smiley Theme for the Pidgin Multi-protocol Messenger. The innovation was that it was implementing the original emoticons/smileys of their respective messenger/protocol - Yahoo!, AIM, ICQ, etc.
Today I give it a major push - easy installation and new hosting place.

Messengers/Protocols Supported
Latest Version
1.3 (changelog inside the archive - pidgin-original/changelog.txt)
Installation
If you want to install the smileys for all users, read how to do it in the FAQ section.
You can also take a look at
My Pidgin Setup - Graphics and My Pidgin Setup - Plugins.
Looking forward to your feedback!
TGZ - UNIX only?
Even if 0.8.3+ versions have changed to TGZ format (instead of ZIP), this doesn’t make the theme UNIX specific. You can install it the same way under Windows too. The file it is still an archive and you can easily convert it to ZIP, if you feel like it, by using many archive converters (e.g. like the freeware ArcConvert for Windows).
Transparency Issues
On dark backgrounds, you may notice that the smileys are not perfectly transparent. Stop wining about it! First of all, a light background is perfectly fine. The fact that you want a dark background is your issue! If you have the time and knowledge to improve the transparency of the smilies, you’re most welcome to do it on your own and then send me some updates.
Duplicate themes?
If you had the 0.8.2 or lower version, after you performed the “easy installation” of newer versions, you might find yourself with “duplicate” Original Smileys themes.
One is the new version, one is the old version.
That is because previous versions were being installed for all users, while the “easy installation” (drag & drop) performs the installation in the user’s profile.
Read below if you want to perform an installation for all users.
-
In order to delete the old version, installed for all users, you must
Installation for All Users?
There is no “easy installation” (drag and drop) for all users, but it’s not that hard either.
Merely a living soul;
mostly one that survives.
Often seeing the best in people;
surely one that dies trying.

I attempted to edit the pidgin-original theme file to pull the emotes for AIM 6.5 from a folder of iChat icons that I had been using previously as default. I copied the same format and the directories are correct; however, pidgin no longer recognizes the theme file in *-original, but it will recognize the other *-original-* folders. I’ve done this before, and never had it completely ignore a theme file. Do you know why this might be happening?

@Brandon: 1. I have no idea what you did wrong and I’m not going to spend time/energy figuring it out. Don’t take it the wrong way, but my time is very limited these days.
2. As far as I know the latest version of the Original Smileys theme has the icons for AIM 6.5

I did intend to say only the chat smileys. Will look forward to that update. You’ve done a fab job with the emoticon pack

Using Pidgin 2.5.2, on Ubuntu 8.10. skype4pidgin, pidgin-facebookchat-1.38, msn-pecan, and your smiley pack installed. Smileys don’t work, and whenever I try to change anything in the Smiley Themes section of Preferences, Pidgin dies - just closes itself. Any idea where the problem is?

@James: Sorry to reply to myself, but I uninstalled skype4pidgin as it wasn’t being used much, and then disabled my Facebook account. Smileys now work on all other networks. Not a real solution, but perhaps a step in the right direction..

@James: I can honestly say I’m using Pidgin weekly, with YAHOO; MSN; GTALK; FACEBOOK; SKYPE; ICQ; AIM; QQ; GG; TLEN, and my Smiley theme, on Vistax32.. absolutely no problem (only the Facebook plugin does crash my Pidgin now and then)
I’m glad you found your fix, but as a general rule.. my smiley theme cannot really crash Pidgin on an individual scale (i.e. only on some systems).

Unfortunately Pidgin crashes in Ubuntu Intrepid 8.10×64 as well with when the smileys are installed and attempt is made to use them. It’s most likely a x64 related bug.

@Arup Roy Chowdhury: Since I cannot do testing on an x64 machine, can you please try out the “single” themes for each protocol, and isolate the protocol themes that are crashing Pidgin?

Hi Andrei, sorry to bother again.. but for some reason the new Gtalk coloured smileys go into a loop.. that is, after I hit enter, the animation (conversion from text smiley to a graphical one) keeps looping over and over again. It works fine for other smileys though.
Perhaps you’d like to take a look at it. Thanks!

@Aditya: It’s true. I already put it in the changelog as a TO DO, but I have no time now to edit them and set the looping to 1, instead of 0 (forever).
If you(or someone else) can do it, then just send the GIFs back to me, and I’ll update the theme pack.

Andrei,
The latest smileys don’t crash on Ubuntu Intrepid x64. Job well done, its most likely a Windows issue.

[...] Neculau has made a collection of various protocols’ emoticons and provided them here. You just need to download the tarball, go to the Preferences menu in Pidgin then look for that [...]
